The Recovery Checklist: What Actually Speeds It Up
June 22, 2026
Training breaks muscle down. Everything that makes you stronger happens between sessions, so recovery is not the soft part of the program. It is the program.
The non-negotiables
- Protein at every meal. Recovery runs on amino acids. Spread 3 to 5 protein feedings across the day.
- Sleep 7 to 9 hours. Growth hormone release and tissue repair concentrate in deep sleep. Nothing supplemental competes with this.
- Water. Even mild dehydration measurably reduces strength the next day.
The helpers
- EAAs or BCAAs around training can support recovery when whole-food protein is far away.
- Glutamine supports gut health during hard training blocks.
- Light movement on rest days beats total couch time. A walk moves blood without adding fatigue.
The overrated
Ice baths straight after lifting can blunt the growth signal you just trained for. Save cold exposure for rest days or competition weeks.
